Medicine Drum Birthing Ceremony

  • Wilton CT, ReWilding Wellness The Center for Holistic Psychology 134 Old Ridgefield Road Wilton, CT 06897 (map)

Experience the magic of birthing your own medicine drum with your very own love, passion & energy entwined in its being. The creation of the drum is a Sacred act, bringing deeper awareness to your own creative process in which we honor the animal whose hide we are working with, the tree, the journey and the gift of life itself.

The drum making process is a birth of the Self, an opportunity to bear witness to the unravelling and re-weaving of your heart-song and spirit path.

Led by the four directions, we will delve into time-honored Sacred ways and follow the guidance of the center altar and the medicine wheel.

As a final passage, I will drum over each newly born drum to pass on the transmission gifted to me by the Original Mother of Drums, holding ancient codes for a new time.

We will be making your choice of a 14", 16" or 18" round elk-hide drum with salvaged yellow cedar frame and the mallet.

It’s hard to capture the experience of a drum birthing ceremony with Mia in words. It is a transcendent journey filled with magic, beauty, song, community, love and the gift of bringing our hearts to work through our hands to create our sacred drums — all while paying reverence to Mother Earth, the elements and our more-than-human world. Mia is an incandescent teacher, healer and drumdoula. I loved being in her warm, wise and generous presence, listening to her stories, hearing her sing and play her drum and knowing that this was so much more than a workshop. Birthing a drum with her felt like receiving sacred medicine and I’m so excited to see where my drum and I will journey together.

Wapiti in native tongue.

Stamina, Strength, Perseverance, Nobility

My personal favorite is Elk, it's all about having the stamina to follow through in all our endeavors, especially multidimensional ones. Elk hide holds a powerful sound and resonance. It teaches us how to pace ourselves whereas we might not be the first to arrive, but we will arrive without burning out. Not trying for quick and easy as long and steady is the key to reaching our goals.

Elk is a symbol of resilience, stamina and power to follow through therefore it is a great energy to have in a medicine drum to communicate and hold council with the other world. The times when we might be afraid, not sure or doubt something both in the Earthly realm or the Spirit realm, this energy will help us stay with the truth and follow through to the other side. Oftentimes this is where miracles happen. Call on the Elk when that extra courage, energy or reassurance is needed. The Elk is Matriarch, as the herd is run by a single female, therefore it honors the Divine Feminine.
